Confey’s under 17s made it two wins from two away from home in the league with a comprehensive win over Stella Maris at Albert College on Sunday the 4/10/09. The visitors were on top from the start and could have broken the ice when a close range Steven Nicholas flick on was tipped around the post when it looked goalward bound. Confey pressed on and had the ball in the back of the net only to be denied for what appeared to be an offside decision. Confey looked solid in defence with Sean Newcoombe giving a commanding performance at right back. Confey had several attempts on goal from front men Jordan Martin and Collie May without testing the keeper. Confey were also frustrated by several close offside decisions that went the way of the home side. Undeterred the green machine kept up the pressure and was rewarded with a deserved lead when Steven Nicholas delivered a perfectly struck free around the wall from outside the box into the bottom of the net. The resilient Stella defence held out to half time despite the almost entire domination of possession by the Confey side.

The second half followed a similar pattern with the home side under increasing pressure. Karl Smith was giving a man of the match performance at centre midfield aided by the hard working Eoin Spillane. Confey freshened up the midfield with Stephen Doolan and Stephen Doran entering the fray. Doolan in particular showed excellent close ball control and an eye for a pass. The two substitutes almost combined for the second goal when a great cross field pass from Doolan picked out Doran inside the box. Stephen, despite his best efforts, failed to finish from close range. It was Doolan who put the tie beyond any doubt when following a pin point delivery from David Michael Sterio he cleverly chipped the advancing keeper from 25 yards. Confey should have made it three when following excellent build up play involving Jordan Martin and Stephen Doran freeing Eoin Spillane to break into the box only to see his goal bound effort tipped over the bar. Confey ran out comfortable winners as the home side became increasingly frustrated resulting in a late sending off.
