Confey’s Under 16 side have continued their push for promotion back to the top flight. A comfortable win against local opposition Lexlip Utd saw the green / white machine move into third with a double header against fellow promotion rivals St Patrick’s Athletic on the horizon. This was a pressure game in which Confey showed some real class particularly in the opening quarter when they totally overran the visitors. Confey could have broken the deadlock within three minutes when top striker Eoin Spillane went close. Follow up moves involving the excellent Jason O Conor and Striker Stephen Galavan put further pressure on the Leixlip side. Confey took a deserved lead on 10 minutes when great build up play ended with Steven Nicholas steering his shot from outside the box into the bottom corner. This was a lead that should have set the home side up for a comfortable victory. Andy Whelan broke from left full back and saw his goal bound shot deflected past the post with the keeper beaten. A great delivery from a Steven Nicholas free presented another great chance. It resulted in a near miss by Collie May at the far post with the goal at his mercy. Quality deliveries from several corners presented opportunities that passed close to the post and clipped the cross bar. Despite having the lion’s share of possession and creating several further excellent chances Confey failed to add to their tally.

The second have followed a similar patter with the home side in the ascendancy. Lexlip were lucky to remain within striking distance and rarely posed a treat from an attacking perspective. Several Confey moves ended with near misses. Eoin Spillane and David Daniels both delivered testing balls that almost resulted in goals. Striker Stephen Galavan went close and second half substitute Paddy Kabangu managed to clear the cross bar when it looked easier to score. Confey did not have it all there own way and some direct football from Leixlip caused momentary anxiety in the Confey box. Centre half Conor Mc Loughlin and Rudi Eloma were resilient against the occasional attacks from the visitors. Confey still retain the best defensive record in the league and will need to maintain this form if silverware is to be secured. Confey keeper David Michael Sterio kept another clean sheet and showed some great handling particularly when under pressure from the visiting aerial attack. A top class performance from Sean Casey in midfield insured that the home side were worthy victors on the night. The score line did not reflect the gap between the teams. Confey go on now to battle for top honours while Leixlip will need some results to avoid relegation. This game was attended by a big crowd with many teenagers in the park giving great support to both sides.
